Nov. 23, An Unreasonable Amount of Whining, Three Shots, Really?

Some days nothing, nothing, nothing goes right. I was already barely functioning from lack of sleep when I decided to shoot the roll of HP-5 I had in my old Pentax SV, I thought this also might be a good time to shoot some close ups with the No. 2 close up lens since it was already on the camera.

It seemed like things were going ok. I was successfully aiming the camera, pressing the shutter and rewinding afterward. Ha! Little did I comprehend the myriad things that can go wrong with old cameras. While I thought that I was taking whole photographs, in most instances I was actually taking half photos, apparently because one shutter curtain had decided that inertia was now more than it could overcome.

I thought I would develop this roll in Artemisianol since I was about to make up a new developer (Compostinol, but more on that later) and wanted to use up the last dregs of the Artemisianol I had on hand. I thought about filtering it, but in the end I couldn’t be bothered. I should have listened to my first mind, almost the whole roll, in addition to being only half shots, was incredibly schmutzy. Oye. Some days you just can’t get a break.

So here are the three not too horrible shots from that ill fated roll of HP-5. After I post this I’ll lick my wounds some more and figure out whether to get the SV repaired or try and find an SV or Spotmatic that’s already been CLA’d.

Just as I’m about to schedule this for publishing I have my eye on both a Praktica TL100 and a Voigtlander Bessamatic TM, the Voigtlander is a little spendy and I’m not sure I’d use an SLR enough to justify the cost of it. I know I could pick up and old Nikon in good shape for less than the cost of the Bessamatic but I like the idea of being able to use my one M42 lens, actually a friend is borrowing a couple nice old Zeiss lenses that could be easily adapted to M42. Hmmm, I dunno. Anyone rational willing to weigh in here? I think I really am a rangefinder guy, but everyone needs at least one SLR no?
